Dear HITA Member:
This year the Houston Interpreters and Translators Association will celebrate International Literacy Day (September 8) by conducting a book drive to benefit PROJECT LEARN.
PROJECT LEARN offers English lessons for non-English speaking parents at the Lamar Independent School District. While parents learn English in one classroom, ESL teachers and volunteers babysit and assist the students’ children with their homework assignments. PROJECT LEARN runs on a tight budget and is always in need of donations.
From March 10, 2008 until September 8, 2008, HITA will have a collection box available during all social and quarterly meetings for members to donate new or slightly used books, including dictionaries. Donated books do not necessarily have to be in English, since the program is geared towards helping individuals of limited English proficiency. A majority of the participants speak Spanish.
On September 9, 2008, HITA will present all donated books to the Project Learn office, which will then place them in the PROJECT LEARN library.
Please be generous and help us make this event a success. Remember, adults and children of all nationalities and ethnic backgrounds in this community will benefit from your contributions.
Thank you
HITA Board of Directors
